Why "Little Black Lê" Stayed With Me

Little Black Lê poster

We usually know what authenticity looks like. Or at least we think we do.

Little Black Lê quietly challenges that assumption. The film tells the story of a real person. Yet the person we see is a virtual character created to represent their experience.

For so long we've associated authenticity with seeing the real face, hearing the real voice, or watching a trained performer. This film asks whether authenticity might come from somewhere else entirely.

The technology is noticeable, but it isn't what I kept thinking about after the film ended. I kept thinking about the relationship between truth and representation.

Can a virtual person communicate something deeply human? Can someone who isn't a singer still move us through a song? Little Black Lê doesn't answer those questions. It simply leaves us with them.

Perhaps authenticity isn't determined by who delivers the story. Perhaps it's determined by whether the story itself rings true.

Little Black Lê, directed by Marcelo Presotto, Brazil. HASFA co-winner, Best Music Video, 2026. Season 1, complete.
