Why "Before Mount Rushmore" Stayed With Me

Before Mount Rushmore: The Story of Spotted Tail poster

Nearly all of the world's knowledge sits a few keystrokes away, and it still amazes me how often I discover stories I never knew existed. Before Mount Rushmore: The Story of Spotted Tail was one of them.

Before Mount Rushmore became an American landmark, the land held deep meaning for the Lakota people. The film invites us to consider how the same place can represent pride for some and profound loss for others.

The film doesn't ask us to abandon one story in favor of another. It asks something harder. What truths have we never been invited to hear?

The most powerful stories don't always give us answers. Sometimes they simply widen our perspective enough to realize there was another side of the conversation all along.

History today often gets reduced to headlines, algorithms and certainty. Stories like this are a reminder that understanding begins with listening.

Perhaps that's one of storytelling's greatest responsibilities. Not to make us comfortable, but to make us curious.
